Carlos Machado

Hi! I’m Carlos Machado, a first-year Ph.D. student in Informatics at the University of Minho and HASLab/INESC TEC, where I conduct research on operating systems. My current research focuses on eBPF, particularly its use for observability, performance analysis, and optimization of modern computer systems.

Before starting my Ph.D., I obtained my B.Sc. in Computer Science and my M.Sc. in Informatics Engineering from the University of Minho. My master’s thesis, Bridging the Gap: A Comparison of the Design, Efficiency, and Fidelity of eBPF Libraries, studied the design trade-offs of existing eBPF libraries and resulted in a publication at the Workshop on eBPF and Kernel Extensions (eBPF ‘25), co-located with ACM SIGCOMM, where I presented the work.

Since 2023, I have been a Research Assistant at HASLab/INESC TEC, contributing to projects involving eBPF-based operating systems education, kernel observability, and the application of eBPF to deep learning systems. My Ph.D. research focuses on redesigning and optimizing eBPF for observability and tuning of modern systems.
